The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
